Bikram Yoga helped me to stay as mentally and physically fit as possible during my illness.
My first Bikram Yoga class was in 2005 at Bikram Yoga Amsterdam. I had read about it in a magazine and I was very curious because this yoga sounded really different and challenging. I had never done yoga, but I did a lot of sport, especially running, fitness and aerobics. And now I was looking for something that would bring me peace in my head but what would also be physical.
Physically and mentally the biggest challenge ever
Bikram Yoga proved physically and mentally the greatest challenge ever. I began to take regular lessons and noticed that my breathing became more powerful; I had more endurance and improved my running performance. In addition, I felt mentally strong and in balance. I started thinking about becoming a teacher and after following an advanced seminar in 2011, I knew for sure: I wanted to get to know this yoga through and through. I wanted to give lessons!
Breast cancer
But fate decided differently, not long after the seminar I discovered a lump in my chest. I was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. It was a difficult time. The treatment not only weakened me physically, but also exhausted me mentally. Bikram Yoga helped me to cope with this and the support from the yoga community has done me a lot of good. Almost every day I was in the Bikram Yoga studio in The Hague.
From student to teacher
After I was cured, in the spring of 2013 I stopped my work and still went to the Bikram Yoga Teacher Training. I hope that everyone can experience the healing power of Bikram Yoga. Thanks to teaching, I get the chance to transfer my knowledge about Bikram Yoga benefits and to inspire others. It is the most fulfilling thing I have ever done!
